dear my beloved lecture,

I have read the materials evaluations (page 97-105) and evaluations (page144-156). In my oppinion, this is the difficult part on English for Specific Purposes. To conduct materials with define criteria - subjective analysis - objective analysis - matching. Besides, We must know much of what our students needs. So, as the instructions of ESP someday, we have to good both in English and how to give materails evaluation for our students. This what you are going for our final task to practice us conduct the materials and evaluation.
thank you

Ass Bu, How are you? I hope the students who participate in the writing competition will win and you come back to Bogor safely. I had read the material about the material evaluations (page 97-105). bu, I want to know about concept model of the evaluation because in your textbook there is no material about it. but I get the concept model from the internet like this.
Conceptual model of evaluation:
1. choose tools for evaluation
2. develop evaluation question
3. collect data
4. analyze data
Is it the conceptual evaluation?
thank you bu.

My cute lecturer, I have read the materials evaluation and evaluation, theese are my conclusions and comments.

SUMMARY
-Materials Evaluation-
*There are three possible ways of turning course design into actual teaching materials:
1.Select from existing materials: materials evaluation.
2.Write your own materials:materials development.
3.Modify exixting materials:materials adaption.
*Advantages of materials evaluation:
1.Lead to a large investment of money in a published course or large investment of time in home-produced oradapted materials.
2.Save a lot of expense and frustration.
3.Helping justifying request to sponsors or others members of ESP team for money and time.
*Four major steps:
1.Defining criteria,
2.Subjective analysis,
3.Onjective analysis, and
4.Matching.

-Comment-
Materials Evaluation is needed to be done, because it can make the materials are more available to be given to the students. Materials like a source of knowledge that should be given to the students. A good materials can make us save our money to search another material to cover or add the lack of the previous material, and also to solve our time to write another materials. So, belief or not, that materials evaluation is worth and important for both teacher and learner.

SUMMARY
-Evaluation-
*Two levels of prominent evaluation :
1.Learners Assessment. It is importamt because students need to be assessed (assess students performance at strategic point in the course), for example at the beginning and at the end.
2.Course Evaluation. Evaluate the course itself. This help us to assess whether the course objectives are being met, and whether the course, in other words, is doing what it was designed to do.
*Types of assessment:
1.Placement test.
2.Achievement test.
-The basic principle for constructing the test:
a)Test what you can reasonably assume the learners have learnt.
b)Test should test what you want it to test.
c)Avoid bias in the test.
*This test is a suitable of evaluating the learners' understanding of the material:
a)It involves production as well as understanding.
b)It is an integrated task rather than a set of discrete-poit test focussing on particular sub-skills.
c)The content is of a similar nature to that of the unit.
d)The subject matter is probably already known to the learners.
e)It does not require knowledge of subject-specific vocabulary.
f)It tests written production.
3.Proficiency test.

8.Very good user
7.Good user
6.Competent user
5.Modest user

--Comment--
Evaluation likes a mirror. It gives us feedback of something we have done. It can be also a burden for us if we do a wrong doing. For example: we have taught our students one of the tenses, so we evaluate it by giving the test. If we teach the students well that make them understand in its material so then they exactly able to answer the question correctly. But if we just sit and speak only the important of the lesson without making them really understand of the material, the students will not be able to answer correctly because they are not understanding for the material.

Those are from me. I hope you will explain about them more clearly on next week.Thank you my lovely lecture.....

Dear Bu Atti

I am Siti Cahyani from class VIII-C. My summary about the materials are:

Material Evaluation
Actual teaching material:
a.select from existing materials: materials evaluation
b.write your own materials: materials development
c.modify existing materials: materials adaptation.

Four major evaluation process: Defining criteria, Subjective analysis, Objective analysis, and Matching.

Material evaluation process is a means of questioning and developing your own ideas as to what is required.

Evaluation

Two levels of evaluation:
A learner assessment is to assessment of student performance. Three basic types of assessment:
Placement test. These are used to ‘place’ learners in the ESP course most suited to their needs. The placement test normally comes at the beginning of the course.
Achievement test. These test how well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus and can be administered any time through the course.
Proficiency test. These assess whether or not the student can cope with the demands of a particular situation.

B Course Evaluation helps to show how well the course is actually fulfilling the need.
There are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
1. What should be evaluated?
- your ability to collect the information
- your ability to use the information once it has been collected
2. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
- test results
- questionnaires
- discussion
- interviews
- informal means
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
- the ESP teaching institution
- the ESP teacher
- the learners
- the course sponsor
4. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?
- in the first week of the course
- at regular interval throughout the course
- at the end of the course
- (if possible) after the course.

Comment:
After read and summarized the material, I am realized that to make an evaluation were not easy. It takes a lot of time, attention and energy. But it had been done because it is important to know our work. Evaluation is the representation from our works and students achievement.

Ass,how are you bu? I hope you always fine in everywhere.. I will give my summary and comments about Materials evaluation and Evaluation. I will start from 'Materials evaluation'.
There are 3 possible ways of turning your course design into actual teaching materials:
a. Select from existing materials:materials evaluation.
b. Write your own materials:materials development.
c. Modify existing materials:material adaptation.
1. Why evaluate materials? Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose.
2. How do you evaluate materials? Evaluation is basically a matching process:matching needs to available solutions. It means that as the teacher we should match the students' need and give best solution from it.
There are 4 major steps on the evaluation process:
a. Defining criteria.
b. Subjective analysis.
c. Objective analysis.
d. Matching.
The evaluation process should be systematic, and the teacher should an appropriate materials evaluation for the learner.
"Evaluation"
A demand was generated as a result for courses which would equip particular learners with the necessary skills.
Two levels of evaluation:
A. Learner assessment. Is a need to assess student performance. It means that teacher can give it at the beginning & at the end. In ESP there are 3 basic types of assessment: Placement tests, Achievement tests, Proficiency tests.
B. Course evaluation. This helps to show how well the course is fulfilling the need. There are 4 main aspects of ESP course evaluation (Alderson & Waters, 1983):
a. What should be evaluated?
b. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
c. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
d. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?
*COMMENT*
I realize that assesment is really important to know how far the students' ability. In addition, to be a good teacher we should make appropriate material evaluation to assess what we want to be assess. Besides, before give the assessment as a teacher we should give our students lots of exercise in order to make them used to be evaluated.
I think that all my summarizing and comment,I hope it be one of good comment. I also hope that you can explain those materials for us more clearly next week. Thanks!

Dear bu Atti,
my name's Sinta Puspita Sari (031104008) VIII-A.
This chapter discuss about the material evaluation which is select from existing materials as the way of exploting a course design. Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitnes of something for a particular purpose concerned with relative merit. Basically, it's a matching process (matching needs to available solutions) and it's best to look at the needs and solutions separetly. In evaluation process, there are four major steps, namely: definning criteria, subjective anlysis, objective anlysis and matching. As (Huitchson :1987) said: " you sould use the materials evaluation process as a means of questioning and developing our own ideas as to what is required".
Relating to the mateial evaluation, the type of learner and course also have purposes and procedures in providing feedback on the ESP course. A learner assesment is needed before we will really know what the requirements of a good ESP test are. In course evaluation there are 4 main aspects to be considered: what should be evaluate and involved the evaluation, how to evaluate and when the evaluation take place.
I think that's the important point that I've got from reading this chapter.

Dear bu Atti....
This chapter tells about materials evaluation. Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something of a particular purpose. The results of an evaluation will probably lead to a large investment of money in a publised course or a large investment of time. In home - produced or adapted material. Besides evaluation is basically a matching process: matching need to available solutions. If this matching is to be done as objectivelly as possible, it's based on the the needs and solutions sparately. We can devide the evaluation process into four major steps: defining criteria, subjective analysis, objective analysis and matching. As Huitchinson:1987 said,"You sould use the materials evaluations process as a means of questioning and developing your own ideas as to what to required". That is why we have looked at materials evaluation as one way of exploiting a course design. Even if you eventualy decide your own materials, the evaluation of existing materials can provide a good source of ideas and technique.
That's all my comment.Thanks

Ass,mam haw are you today?after i read the book which title material evaluation, the content include materials evaluation, material development, and material adaptation. from the material writer can learn a lot in terms of ideas and techniques. an esp text book has to suit the needs of a number of parties-teachers, students, sponsor.in this material you should use the materials evaluation process as a means of questioning and developing your own ideas as to what is required. from the title evaluation, we can see there are two levels of evaluation have thus been brought into peominence:
1. learner assessment.
2. course evaluation.
far more research needed before we'll really know what the requirements of a good ESP tese are. we shall return to this point below:
1. Placement test.
2. Achievement test.
3. Proficiency test.
in course evaluation, there are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
1. What should be evaluated?
2. How can ESP course be evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
4. When (ans how often )should evaluation take place.my comment is both of them very important to be learn and we can study because evaluation is very needed in any materials.and also helps to asses how well the needs that have created the demand for a course are being served.that's all my comment to you, thank you for your attention.wasalam.by Rika Andriyani(031104027)/VIII-A.

hi...miss ati. I'm Irna Aryani from VIII/D.
I'll tell my comment.I have read the materials evaluations on page 97-105 and evaluations on page144-156.After reading it, I thought there are more important things that I've got from this chapter. Although I didn't understand some of its contents, I tried to understand it. kind of evaluations which are told in this chapter can be described detail when I related the material with my experience; for example, I ever did a placement test when I would took a course at LPIA Bogor. so I know what its function. In my opinion, Evaluation is important not only to measure the students' ability but also the teachers' success on conveying the materials to the students. To evaluate is to assess and Evaluation is the process of examining a subject. In other word, It representated the students' achievment and the teacher' success. The materials evaluation should be appropriated for the teacher and also the students. Finally, I have a question about the material which I have read. "Do kinds of the evaluations (placement, achievment and proficiency tests) can be applied in GE?"
Those are my comment, I hope you want to explain them detail and clearly on next week...see you, Thanks.

Assalamualaikum wr.wb
Good morning Mrs. Atti..
How are you?
Here are some summary and comments based from the book Hutchinson and Waters’ book page 96-105 on Materials Evaluation and page 144-156 on Evaluation that I’ve read…

SUMMARY
Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose. It is basically a matching process, matching needs to available solutions and can be a good source of ideas to exploiting your needs in materials needs. It can be a made to be better for being based on a systematic check of all the important variables, and also help in justifying requests to sponsors.
Evaluation process can be dividing into 4 major steps:
1. Defining criteria
2. Subjective analysis
3. Objective analysis
4. Matching
There are 3 basic assessments in ESP:
1. Placement test
These “place” learners in the ESP course most suited to their needs.
2. Achievement tests
These test how well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus.
3. Proficiency tests
These assess whether or not the students can cope with the demands of a particular situation.
There are 4 main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
1. What should be evaluated?
2. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
4. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?

COMMENTS
After I have read the book about Material Evaluations and Evaluations, I can conclude that both of them are very important. Material evaluations can make the material be better for the students. These can provide an important knowledge that should be learn by the students without make the materials were complicated. Evaluations are also important. It takes to know how far the students understand our material based from the tests or another way which can make us trust in give them a knowledge not only from understanding the explanations but also can improve their understanding from their answer or responds tests correctly.
I think that’s all from me. Actually I still feel uncertain with all of my comprehension about these materials. I hope you can give the explanations certainly next week to make it better. Thank you….

In my opinion, evaluation is way how to measure something. In this case, evaluation is used for material. Evaluation is given to students when the teacher have finished give material. Evaluation is important because the teacher can measure how far the students can understand about the material and the teacher also can asses his/ herself teaching is successfully or not to students.Thank you

Dear my cute lecturer,
I am Esin Sintawati (VIII.A)
I have read Hutchinson and Waters’ book page 96-105 on Materials Evaluation and page 144-156 on Evaluation. So, in this opportunity, I will give my summary and also comments.

SUMMARY: Materials Evaluation
• There are three possible ways of turning your course design into actual teaching materials:
a. select from existing materials: materials evaluation
b. write your own material: material development
c. modify existing materials: materials adaptation
• the benefits of materials evaluation:
- The result of an evaluation will probably lead to a large investment of money in a published course. Or a large investment of time in home-produced or adapted materials
- A careful evaluation can save a lot of expense and frustration.
- It can also help in justifying request to sponsors or other member of an ESP team for money to buy materials or time to write them.
• The disadvantage of materials evaluation: one text book might match your criteria in terms of content and language areas, but another might have the more appropriate methodology. So we will need to decide which is the more important to the various people concerned: teacher, students, and sponsors.
• There are four major steps of evaluation process:
1. Defining criteria
2. Subjective analysis
3. objective analysis
4. matching
• evaluation is basically a matching process: matching needs to available solution.

COMMENT

In my opinion, making material evaluation is not essay. We have to do several processes to get complete source. It is because materials evaluation based on learner needs, in order to get much information we have to take a lot of information from the learners for example by giving them some questionnaire, interview, etc. After that, we not only take the information to get the documentation of their needed but also we have to analyze it to get concrete information and matching solution for the learners.

SUMMARY: Evaluation

• There are two levels of evaluation
1. learner assessment
As any language course there is a need to assess student performance at strategic pint in discourse. This assessment takes on greater importance of ESP because ESP concerned with the ability to perform particular communicative task.
Three basic types of assessment:
1. Placements test: these test used to ‘place’ learner in the ESP course most suited to their needs.
2. achievement test: these test hoe well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus
The basic principle for constructing test:
a. Test what you can reasonably assume the learners have learnt.
b. Your test should test what you actually want it to test.
c. Avoid bias in the test.
3. proficiency test: these assess whether or not the students can cope the demand of a particular situation

2. Course evaluation: course evaluation is the evaluation of the ESP course itself.
There are four main aspect of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
1. What should be evaluated?
Two importance constraints:
a. your ability to collect information
b. your ability to use the information once it has been collected
2. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
ESP course are evaluated using the following techniques:
- test result
- questionnaire
- discussion
- interview
- informal means
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
It concerned to ESP teaching institution, ESP teacher, learners, and the course sponsors.
4. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?
The most important time:
1. In the first week of the course.
2. At regular intervals throughout the course.
3. At the end of the course.
4. If it possible after the course.

COMMENT

In my opinion, assessment or evaluation is really needed in learning process. It helps teacher to measure their successfully teaching. So the teacher will know whether their teaching technique is good to be used or maybe need some changes for their next teaching. Besides, assessment will help students to measure how far their ability and comprehension of their learning. However the teacher also should give the assessment based on the material that has been given not a different material in order the teacher knows whether the students have followed the lesson well.

That's all my summaries and comments. I hope you will give more clearly explanation next meeting. Thanks for your reading. See you...

I have read the Materials evaluation (page 96-105). Based on materials evaluation that I had read from the book, I would like to make conclusion.
Materials Evaluation is a systematic process; evaluation is a matter of judging and basically as a matching process. Matching needs to available solution separately. In term of the evaluation procedures, there are three major steeps are propose. First, select unit from one volume of the textbooks, secondly, decide and define criteria for the evaluation; thirdly, analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the textbooks in matching their claims with learner's need.
Evaluation is straightforward, analytical process. In that case, analysis of subjective needs (material requirement)and analysis of subjective solution (materials) are both required to find out how far the material matches the needs. Thus, four major steps that can be taken in the evaluation process:
1. Defining criteria
What bases we will judge the materials ?
2. Subjective analysis
What is the realization of the criteria that we want to in our course, (e.g. who are the learner, what language point should be covered)?
3. Objective analysis
What does the material being evaluated (e.g. who is the material intended for)?
4. Matching
How far the material matches our need?

Materials evaluation plays such an important rule in language learning that potential for influencing the way teachers operate is considerable. Material evaluation can provide teachers a good source of techniques, tell us what to do as well as what to avoid and consequently help us make optimum use of the existing materials, and that also worth nothing that evaluation process is particularly helpful for teacher to gain good and useful insight into the nature of the material. Only with this way we can respond to the learners' needs at the most and maximize the teaching/learning objective.

THE SUMMARY:
Dear bu Atti,
After I read the title of material evaluation and Evaluation, I know that in this topic tells about there are three possible ways of turning your course design into actual teaching materials:
a. select from existing materials: material evaluation.
b. Write your own materials: material development.
c. Modify existing materials: materials adaption.
1. Why evaluate materials? Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose.
2. How do you evaluate materials? Evaluation is basically a matching process:matching needs to available solutions. It means that as the teacher we should match the students' need and give best solution from it.
There are 4 major steps on the evaluation process:
a. Defining criteria.
b. Subjective analysis.
c. Objective analysis.
d. Matching.
Then there are two level of evaluation have thus been brought into prominence:
A. Learner assessment
In ESP there are three basic types of assessment:
1. Placement test
the aim of the placement test is to determine the learner' state of knowledge before the ESP course begins.
2. Achievement tests
In constructing a good ESP achievement test you should follow the same basic principles as you would fort constructing any test. For example:
a. Test what you can reasonable assume the learners have learn.
b. Your test should test what you actually want it to test.
c. Avoid bias in the test.
3. proficiency tests.
Proficiency test is design to asses whether candidates will e ale to perform the language tasks required of them.
B. Course Evaluation
Evaluation helps to show how to show how well the course is actually fulfilling the need.
In course evaluation, there are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
1. What should be evaluated?
2. How can ESP course be evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
4. When (ans how often )should evaluation take place.

My comment is material evaluation and evaluation is very important to us to learn. it is because it can helps helps us to asses how well the needs that have created the demand for a course are being served. But, I still confuse to develop material evaluation. So I hope you can explain again in the next meeting.Thanks.

Dear mam,I'll tell my summary. After I read the materials evaluations on page 97-105 and evaluations on page144-156.I thought there are more important things that I've got from this chapter. In chapter 9 tell me about the definition of evaluation. Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose. Evaluation of existing materials can provide a good source of ideas and techniques. The evaluation process should be systematic and is best seen as matching exercise, matching with analyzed needs and with available solutions.we can divide the evaluation process into four major steps:
1. defining criteria
2. subjective analysis
3. objective analysis
4. matching
It will be useful, however, to set out the criteria and the own preferred realizations of the criteria in a form which will make it easy to compare different sets of materials.
In chapter 12, I read about evaluation. there are two levels of evaluation have thus been brought into prominence:

1. learner assessment
in ESP there are three basic types of assessment:
1) placement tests.
2) achievement tests.
3) proficiency tests.

2. course evaluation
There are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered (Alderson and Waters, 1983):
1) what should be evaluated?
2) how can ESP courses be evaluated?
3) who should be involved in the evaluation?
4) when (and how often) should evaluation take place?

my comment about both of the chapters is those of them is very important. because i don't like read book so i still confuse about the material. I thinks thats all about my comment and my summary

Good afternoon Mam, I just want to give a comment about evaluation. In my opinion evaluation is the most important part in teaching learning process. It used to measure the students’ comprehension to the materials given by the teacher during the teaching-learning process so the teacher knows what the materials they haven’t understood yet so she can re-explain it to them. It will be easier for the teacher to know and improve the students’ ability in increasing the students’ comprehension to the materials because a teacher often find some of them who are introvert and won’t to ask about the materials they haven't understood yet, so I think this is a good resolution to help the teacher to solve this problem for the smooth running of the teaching-learning process and also to produce the best students. Beside that, it also shows whether the teacher is success or fail in giving the materials to them.
I think that’s all from me. Thanks.

Assalamualaikum...

Dear Mrs. Atti...
How are you today?
I have read the materials evaluations on page 97-105 and evaluations on page144-156.

After I have read the book about Materials Evaluation and Evaluation, I can conclude that both of them are very important. According to [Henry James:The Art of Fiction]he said that "we must grant the artist his subject, his idea, his donne:our criticism is applied only to to what he makes of it" Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose. How do you evaluate materials? evaluations is basiclly a matching process: matching needs to available solutions. We can divide the evaluation processinto four major steps there are:
1. Defining criteria.
2. Subjective analysis.
3. Objective analysis.
4. Matching.

Two levels of evaluation have thus been brought into prominence:
1. Learner assessment
Learner assessment should logically give to assessment of student performance. There is a general lack of discussion or guidance on ESP testing. ESP test are: the placement test, achievement test, and proficiency test.

2. Course evaluation
help to estabilish whether it is meeting its aims. There are four main aspects of ESP:
1. What should be evaluated?
2. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
4. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?

Comment:
I think material evaluation is very important because we as a teacher must know the student understanding about the material that he or ahe has given, to assess the student comprehensin the teacher must give an evaluation or reply in the next meeting and also teacher can give a task or exercise to increase his or her skill.

That all for my summary and this is my opinion and comment, I hope you will be able to explain for us clearly next week.

Thank you for your attention

Dear Mrs. Atti, I wish u have a nice trip to Yogyakarta with all of the students who follow the writing competition in Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. I had read the book of Hutchinson and Waters’ book page 96-105 for the material evaluation and the page of 144-156 for the Evaluation.
In the chapter of material evaluation, i conclude that material evaluation as one way of exploiting a course design. even i have my own material, i have to do the material evaluation so it can provide a good source of ideas about what the technique of teaching/material that we have to avoid as well as what to do and also for the process of the evaluation, we should do it with a good processing or it can be said with a good proposition,so when we give the material to the student we will not give the material which is not have a good quality.
for the next chapter of the evaluation, i conclude that we should consider the role that tests play within a learning-centered approach to ESP.for this chapter, test should be recognized for the important role they play in the teaching-learning process. the evaluation also can be assessment and feedback. both of them have relation, because assessment is a matter for measuring what the material that learners have know. and the assessment also should provide the positive feedback to inform the teachers and the learners about the material which is not clear enough for the learners so it can provide input to the content and methods of the next teaching.
i think that is enough for me to conclude the material which i had read. ups,,,once again, i forget to tell you that i had past my Seminar Proposal at 28th May 2008. I want to say thank you for giving me support to do the seminar proposal, i hope you don't mind to be my supervisor. Thank you.

After I read the material evaluation on page 97-105

1. Defining criteria
2. Subjective analysis
3. Objective analysis
4. Matching
you should use the materials evaluation process as a means of questioning and developing your ideas as to what is required.
In chapter 12, about Evaluation. There are two levels of evaluation:
A. Learner evaluation
B. Course Evaluation
These two forms of evaluation are not always distinct. Evaluation of the learners reflects not just the learners' performance but to some extent the effectiveness or otherwise of the course too.
In my comment, there are a lot of information that we have to know from two section above. a lot of them very important. But many things that I didn't understand without your explained. Although I red it. I hope you will explain it latter. that's my comment. Thank you...

After we read this matter, we find some useful points that help us to create ESP textbook. At first, we thought we just develop our own material not from the existing material in the students ESP handbook. The points of this chapter explains us the sequence process how to create the suitable ESP textbook which is suitable with ESP learners’ needs.
In matching the suitable ESP material in their textbook, the ESP textbook writers should match the need or the objective analysis and the subjective analysis or own developed material. The objective analysis can be gained by need analysis through giving questionnaires, interviewing, and observing so that the writer know the real need which can help to write the textbook. The subjective analysis means developing the material based on the writers’ wants.
We saw their ESP textbook. The textbook contains the substantial law material using English. The book uses the communicative approach by using dialogue form. The lack of this book is the performance of this book in not attractive so it does not increase the interest of students to read the book.

Any language teaching course has certain evaluation requairement, but in ESP these requairements are brought sarply into focus by the fact that the ESP cours normally has specipied objectives. In spite of the importance, which ESP should logically give to assesment of student performance, there is a general lack of discussion or guidence on ESP testing.

Comment:
i think both of them are very important, because with evaluation the teachers will know more what them students need in the process of study, and they also know how far the students understand the lesson.

Dear My strict and smart lecturer,
Hello Mam, after we had not seen for three weeks I feel miss you. Miss you , when you talking in front of class, when you made eye contact to us. Wow actually that was make you become the highest lecturer for me. Everybody know that you are very strict...you are great!!!!!!and I Need you Mam...
Well, thats only my feeling.Ok Mam in this opportunity I will give my comment of our materials. And please read my resume bellow:

Summary:
Materials Evaluation

For the teacher it is very important to know about course design material so they know how to choose proper materials in teaching.
There are three ways of turning course design into actual teaching materials:
1.select from exiting materials: materials evaluation.
2.Write your own materials: materials development.
3.Modify exiting materials: materials adaptation.

To evaluate materials the teacher need to do the steps of the evaluation process into major steps:
1. Defining criteria.
2. Subjective analysis.
3.Objective analysis.
4. Matching.

The following steps are support the teacher to have materials evaluation. And able to make good evaluation. After I read this chapter I know that materials evaluation as one way of exploiting a course design. I know that by doing this steps as a good teacher able to provide a good source of idea and techniques.

My comment for this chapter_Materials evaluation is teacher can decide their own material but they also can modify the exiting materials. There are important because the teacher can do the evaluation systematically.

Summary_Evaluation
There are two levels of evaluation have thus been brought into prominence:
a. Learner assessment.
As with any language course there is a need to assess students performance at strategic points in the course.
b. Course evaluation.
A second important form of evaluation is the evaluation of the ESP course its self.

In ESP there are three basic types of assessment:
1. Placement tests.
These are used to 'place' learners in ESP course most suited to their needs. The placement test normally comes at the beginning of the course.
2. Achievement test.
These test how well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus and can be administered anytime trouhg the course.
3. Profisiency course.
These assess whether or not the student can coped with the demands of a particular situation.

My comment:
In this section I understand that the successful learner is the learner who know and want to be honest that they are able catch or to reach their need.

Course evaluation.
The ESP course, like any course, should regularly demonstrate that its continued existence in this present form is justified. There are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered:
a. What should be evaluated?
b. How can Esp course be evaluated?
c. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
d. When(and how often) should evaluation take place?

Most ESP courses are evaluated using one or more or the following techniques:
-test results,
-questionnaires,
-discussions,
-interviews,
-informal means.

The evaluation can be done with most important times occur:
1. In the first week of the course. the tone established here probably have a greater overall effect on the success of the course enduring than later ones.
2. at regulars intervals throughout the course, for example, every half term.
3. at the end of the course.
4. if possible, after the course.

This chapter is talking about the evaluation of the student and evaluation of the course. We have to outlined the ways in which both kinds of evaluation can be carried out and have described how each fits into a learning centered approach.

My comment:
Wow, this chapter is quite difficult for me to understand. But I try to conclude with my own words. In evaluation section, more emphasis on student ability to gets the goal of the ESP course and how to measure the students ability. Beside that the teacher also give kinds of evaluation in proper times.

Ok Mam thats above are my resumes and my comments of this chapter. I hope it can be a good effort for me to understand your materials. Thank you for reading my comment. Last word.....Mrs. Atti is my great lecturer EVA:)

Dear Mrs. Atti
Good afternoon Mom, how are you today?

After I read the book about the Material Evaluation and Evaluation it is very important for our learning. in the chapter of evaluation we shall look at the three options, such as:
a. select from existing materials: Materials evaluation
b. Write your own materials: Materials development
c. Modify existing materials: Materials adaptation.
And then we can see the steps of evaluation process, there are:
1. Defining Criteria
2. Subjective analysis
3. Objective analysis
4. Matching
The materials evaluation process have the more appropriate methodology. in the subjective analysis and the objective analysis we can do analysis about audience.
Most of the work of the first two stages will have been done in the course design stage. it will be useful to set out our criteria and preferred realizations of the criteria in a form which will make is easy to compare different sets of materials.
in the materials about Evaluation have twp levels of evaluation into prominence, there are:
A. Learner assessment, as with any language course there is a need to assess student performance at strategic points in the course.
B. Course evaluation, a second important form evaluation is the evaluation of the ESP course itself.

1. Placement tests, these are to place learners
2. Achievement test, These test how the learner is keeping up with the syllabus
3. Proficiency test, these assess whether or not the student can cope the demands of a particular situation.

Comment:
In this chapter, i think about both is very important for teaching learning and as a teacher we must understand about material is given for student in teaching in the class because the students need about the material. I'm confused about these material and I hope for next week, you would be teaching with clearly for us in the class.

SUMMARY- Material Evaluation

1. why we evaluate materials?
Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for particular purpose. There is no absolute good or bad, only degrees of fitness for the required purpose. The results of an evaluation will probably lead to a large investment of money in a published course or a large investment of time in home-produced or adapted materials.

2. How do you evaluate materials?
Evaluation is basically a matching process: matching need to available solution.
The evaluation process can be divided into four major steps:

1. Defining Criteria
-On what bases will you judge the materials?
-Which the criteria will be more important?
2. Subjective Analysis
-What realisations of the criteria do you want in your course?
3. Objective Analysis
-How does the material being evaluated realise the criteria?
4. Matching
-How far does the material match your needs?

*The evaluation process should be systematic and is the best seen as a matching exercise: matching your analyzed needs with available solution.

COMMENT
I think if we want to evaluate the materials we have to analyze the materials then we use the steps of evaluation process.

SUMMARY-Evaluation

A. Learner assessment
Any language course there is a need to assess student performance at strategic points in the course, for example, at the beginning and at the end. This assessment takes on the greater importance in ESP, because ESP is concerned with the ability to perform particular communicative tasks.
In ESP there are three basic types of assessment :
1. Placement tests
These are used to 'place' learners in the ESP course most suited to their needs. The placement test normally comes at the beginning of the coiurse.
2. Achievement tests
These test how well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus and can be administered any time through the course.
3. Proficiency tests
These assess whether or not the students can cope with the demand s of a particularly situation.

B. Course Evaluation
There are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to considered (Alderson and Waters, 1983):

a. What should be evaluated?
Everything of significance. There are two important constraints:
i) Your ability to collect the imformation.
ii) Your ability to use the information once it has been collected.

b. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
In practice, most ESP courses are evaluated using one or more of the following techniques:
-test results
-questionnaries
-discussions
-interviews
-informal means

c. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
d. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?
i) in the first week of the course
ii)at regular intervals throughout the course
iii)at the end of the course
iv) (if possible)after the course.

COMMENT
- i want to ask to you Mom. What we do when we use an assessment?

Thank you very much
See you...

My name is Lina Fitria Sari(031103137) from class E. This is my summary on page 96-105 and page 144-156. and this my comment too.
SUMMARY :
Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose. In any kind of evaluation, the decision finally made is likely to be the better for being based on a systematic check of all the important variables. We can divide the evaluation process into four major steps :
1. Defining criteria.

EVALUATION
A learners assessment. The facility to assess proficiency is, therefore, central to the whole concept of ESP. The result of this kind of evaluation, for example, enable sponsor, teachers and learners to decide whether and how much language tuition is required.
B. Course evaluation. This kind of evaluation helps to assess whether the course objectives are being met-whether the course, in other words, is doing what it is was designed to do.
My comment about this subject, I a little bit understand but I don't know the meaning about that. I hope you can explain that in your class on Thursday.

Dear Ms. Atti,
I am Subriatul Wirda (031104125/VIII E). These are my summary and comment for chapter 9:Materials evaluation and chapter 12: Evaluation.
• Summary
Evaluation is one of steps of making an ESP textbook. It is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose. In other words, evaluation is a process of determining the appropriate materials for the needs—not only learners’ needs but also teacher’s and sponsors’ needs.
Next, there are four steps in the evaluation process, those are: defining criteria, subjective analysis, objective analysis, and matching. The two first steps are used to set out the criteria and the realisations of the criteria. First, we should determine the criteria which is more important. Second, we should analyze what realisations of the criteria. Next, we also should analyze whether the material realise the criteria or not. Finally, we match the material and the needs.
There are two levels of evaluation, those are Learner assessment and Course evaluation. Learner assessment is assessing students performance at strategic points in the course. This is very important because ESP is concerned with the ability to perform particular communicative tasks. The result of this kind of evaluation enable sponsors, teachers and learners to decide whether and how much language tuition is required. Next, Course evaluation is the evaluation of ESP course itself. It assesses whether the course had been objective.
• Comment
In teaching-learning process, there must be an evaluation. I had thought that evaluation is only giving test to the learners. However, after I read chapter 9 and 12, I just know that the process of designing the test has been included to an evaluation. Also, in assessment we do not only assess the students’ success but also assess the success of the teaching process. That is what I got after I read the chapters, but please correct if I was wrong. Next, I could imagine how it would be so difficult to do materials evaluation and evaluation for our project. However, it should be done and I would be glad to do it because I believe that it would be very useful for the future.
I think that’s all my summary and comment. Thank you very much...

After I read the chapter of materials Evaluation on page 96-105 and Evaluation on page 144-156 in Hutchinson and Waters' book. I concluded that evaluation is one way to exploit a course design and it also can provide a good source of ideas and technique. Beside it, it can save a lot of duplication of exiting materials can provide all or part of our materials needs. The evaluation process must be systematic and is best seen as a matching exercise: matching needs our analyzed needs with available solutions.
Actually the four major steps of evaluation process are related each other. By knowing the define criteria, which we have already done in the course design, then,we go forward in to subjective analysis and Objective analysis. After knowing both of them, we can match students' needs to available solutions.
Evaluation can fulfill two functions assessment and feedback. Assessment is a matter of measuring what the learners already know. However, any assessment should also provide positive feedback to inform teachers and learners about what is still not known, thus providing important input to the content and methods of future work.
For course evaluation, we need to involve all those who share the learning process in making the ESP course as satisfying to the parties as possible.
I think that's all my comprehension about this chapter, I still need your more explanation at the class to add my information about it. See you at the class. Bye...

Dear Bu Atti,
This time I would like to summarize the materials that I have read.
# Materials Evaluation (page 96-105)
After completing needs analysis and course design, now we decide our materials evaluation. Materails should be evaluated for certain purpose. Evaluation is concerned with relative merit which does not have absolute good or bad-only degrees of fitness for the required purposes. Evaluation is basically a matching process: matching needs to available solutions.
There are four major steps of evaluation process:
1. Defining criteria
2. Subjectibe analysis
3. Objective analysis
4. Matching
We should use the materials evaluation process as a means of questioning and developing our own ideas as to what is required (Hutchinson, 1987)
# Evaluation (page 145-156)
There are two levels of evaluation have been brought into prominence:
A. Learner Assesment
The result of this kind of evaluation, for example, enable sponsors, teachers and learners to decide whether and how much language tuition is required.

1. Placement tests
2. Achievement tests
3. Proficiency tests

B. Course Evaluation
This kind os evaluation helps to asses whether the course objectives are being met-whether the course, in other words, is doing what it was designed to do.

My comment:
I confess that materials evaluation and evaluation seem complicated. Honestly, I do not understand the whole materials by only reading it once or twice. However, I can catch the gist. The steps of evaluation process which is explained by Hutchinson will be very useful. I wonder if there is another process. Bu, I hope you do not mind if I ask this: are all teachers do the process?
PS: Please...please... answer my question next week and explain if there is another process of evaluation. Thank you very much.
See you next week

How is going on in Jogja? Are you having good time there? I hope so. I also wish the best for those who join the writing competition in UNY. They got our full support to win the competition.
Here some summary and comment about the materials evaluations (page 97-105) and evaluations (page144-156)

SUMMARY

Materials Evaluation

There are is no right or wrong in evaluating materials, the important thing is how closer we can achieve the goal. Many consideration why we have to reduce the disadvantages of the evaluation, as example, time and money. Don’t let your team waste the money just to buy materials, this is important. Another thing is time, you don’t need all day just to write the material , do you? So you better think smart.
Originally, evaluation is the process of matching needs to the right solutions. One thing for sure, be objective not subjective. As a proverb says : don’t judge the book by its cover.
There are four major steps of evaluation process:
1. Defining criteria
2. Subjective analysis
3. objective analysis

2. How can ESP courses be evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the evaluation?
4. When (and how often) should evaluation take place?

COMMENT

Making material evaluation is not as easy as we think, In fact, it needs a lot of preparations. ESP is focus on learners, from them we get all the information that we need. In that way to know the progress of the course, we do some assessment, not only for the learners but also the whole course as well. Mam, i need your help to make me understand about this material. I’m looking forward to meet you again in the class.

Good afternoon Mrs. Atti. I have read the hand book of ESP. basically material evaluation is learning us to exploiting our ability to make own syllabus and to guiding us to make good material. Then, evaluation process can defined into four major steps there are defining criteria, subjective analysis, objective analysis, and matching. After I read this material I know that evaluation process should be systematic and is best seen a matching exercise.I still confused about the steps in using check list so I have to read many times.Unfortunately, this week I will not get the explanation from you. For the evaluation there are two kind of evaluation.Evaluation of the students and evaluation of the course. we have outlined ways in which both kinds of evaluation can be carried out and we have described how each fits into learning centred approach. for the students assement, it means emphasizing what tests can tell us about learning needs.
For this material I still confused because so many things that difficult to understand but i got some new information from this book. I hope next week you will give clear explanation.
That's all about my summary and comment. Thank you for your attention.

Dear Miss Atti,
How are you today?
I’m Asri Restu Gumanti (VIII-D)

After I’ve read the chapter about Materials evaluation on the page 96-105 and Evaluation on the page 144-156 I considered that materials evaluation is one way of exploiting a course design. There are three possible ways of turning your course design into actual teaching materials:
1. Select from existing materials: Materials evaluation
2. Write your own materials: Materials development
3. Modify existing materials: materials adoption
The evaluation of existing materials can provide a good of source of ideas and techniques. The evaluation process should be systemic and there are four major steps to divide the evaluation process: defining criteria, subjective analysis, objective analysis and matching exercise.
From the chapter of evaluation, I knew that there are two kinds of evaluation: Evaluation of the student (learner assessment) and evaluation of the course (course evaluation). Learner assessment is a need to assess student’s performance at strategic points in the course, this also takes on a greater importance on ESP. The result of this kind of evaluation is to decide whether and how much language tuition is required. It also means what test can tell us about learning needs. Next, for the course design, it helps to assess whether the course objectives are being met-whether the course is doing what it was doing to do. But course and learners evaluation have a similar function in providing feedback on the ESP course. Each type of evaluation also has other purposes and procedures.
Those are my comments, but I still confuse about the figure in 39, a sample achievement test, would you like to explain it for the next meeting...seeya
Thanks for reading my comment.

Comment:
It is very important for us to evaluate materials because it can improve our subject or idea. even though in reality it was so difficult to evaluate materials.

Here are some of summary on Evaluation:

Two levels of evaluation have thus been brought into prominence:
A. Learning assessment. As with any

B. Course evaluation. A scond
important form of evaluation of
the ESP course itself.
These two forms of evaluation are not always distinct.

In ESP there are three basic types of assessment:
1. Placement test. these are used
to place learners in the ESP
course most suited to their
needs.
2. Achievement tests. these test
how well the learner is keeping

3. Proficiency test. these assess
whether or not the student can

1. What should be evaluated?
2. How can ESP courses be
evaluated?
3. Who should be involved in the

4. When should evaluation take
place?

comment:
In my opinion, it is also important to us to know the person or the students need before we took them in the their place or before placement test.

I have read the materials and I summarized that evaluation is concerned with relative merit which does not have absolute good or bad-only degrees of fitness for the required purposes. Evaluation is basically a matching process: matching needs to available solutions.
There are four major steps of evaluation process:
1. Defining criteria

My comment:
Bu, actually it's hard for me to understand all the materials. it feels different if I learn without you. But I tried to read it many times. In my opinion, evaluation is very important to measure the ability of students so the teacher will know how far the students understand the materials.

I hope you will explain this material next Friday so I can really understand about this material. Thank you Mam,,,

SRI REJEKI

After reading Hutchinson and Waters’ book page 96-105 about Material Evaluation and page 144-156 about Evaluation, I would like to tell about my summary and comment.

MY SUMMARY OF MATERIAL EVALUATION
There are possible ways of turning your course design into factual teaching materials. They are materials evaluation, development, and adaptation.
Evaluation is a matter of judging the fitness of something for a particular purpose.
Evaluation is basically a matching process: matching needs to available solutions. If this matching is to be done as objectively as possible, it is best to look at the needs and solutions separately. In the final analysis, any choice will be made on subjective grounds.
The evaluation process can be divided into four major steps
o Defining criteria
o Subjective analysis
o Objective analysis
o Matching

MY COMMENT OF MATERIAL EVALUATION
I think in making material evaluation, we need to do some process to get good and right about it. Making it needs much information. We can get the information by interviewing the learners, giving closed or opened questioners etc. The material evaluation must be based on the learners’ needs and the teacher will teach the language according to their needs. As the result, the important thing is the students can use and apply what they have learnt.

MY SUMMARY OF EVALUATION
The evaluation process can be divided into four major steps. They are learner assessment and course evaluation.
Learner assessment: As with any language course there is a need to assess students’ performance at strategic points in the course.
Course evaluation: this kind of evaluation helps to assess whether the course objectives are being met - whether the course, in other words, is doing what it was designed to do.
There are 3 types of learner assessment: placement, achievement, and proficiency test.
There are four main aspects of ESP course evaluation to be considered
*What should be evaluated?
*How can ESP courses be evaluated?
*Who should be involved in the evaluation?
*When (and how often) should evaluation take place?

MY COMMENT OF EVALUATION
According to my opinion, in learning process, we as a teacher need to give assessment or evaluation to our learners in order that we can know about their improvement as long as learning with us so that we know whether the teachers succeed or not in teaching their learners. It is also useful for the students because they can measure their ability after learning process. So, it can make them to have more spirit to learn because my experience in teaching showed that if the students were given assessment or evaluations, they really do the tests enthusiastically to get good mark. Nevertheless, the material that is given to them must be based on they learnt.
I think that’s all my summaries and comments. Hopefully, you will explain this material more clearly. Thank you for reading it.

COMMENT : In this chapter (97-105)-(144-156) I was reading at materials evaluation as one way of exploiting a course design. Even if I eventually decide to write own materials, the evaluation of existing materials can provide a good source of ideas and techniques. It can also save a lot of duplication of effort by possibly revealing existing material that can provide all or part of your materials needed. The evaluation process should be systematic and is best seen as a matching exercise : matching your analyzed needs with available solutions. And in this section I must considered some of the mechanics of evaluating learner performance, and in particular I have outlined some of the problems associated with specific purpose testing.Evaluation can fulfill two function such as assessment and feedback.
